This, uhm…apparently derelict hull you see on the pics above is actually a high-tech vessel to be, somewhere in the future. No, it’s true….believe me please! This used to be the proud vessel Paardeberg, a Souh African icebreaker delivering goods & other stuff to the Antarctic but then she got bought by an Aberdeen company with big plans. They had her gutted in the U.S. of A and then transported on a heavy lift vessel to the Netherlands, towed to Aberdeen in the U.K. and then….that same company went bust.

I’m sure that she’ll be back here when she is finished because, according to the plans this is how she is going to look:

 ice-maiden-april-07-1.jpg
 ice-maiden-april-07-2.jpg

Update (29-07-2009)
All the above isn’t going to happen…..nobody is interested in the hull and she will be scrapped. I have no idea when or where they will do that but considering the plans they had for her it’s noting but the best for the whole wide world who otherwise had to witness the above monstrosity.

South African fleet replenishment vessel Outeniqua. I was prompted to post this by seeing Steve Elwood's pics. of her as Ice Maiden I arriving on the Tyne for conversion to an accomodation vessel by A&P and noting there would appear not to be a shot of her on the site

Originally one of a series of ice-breaking ro/ro cargo vessels built for USSR at Kherson Shipyard in the Ukraine in the early '90's, she was launched as Aleksander Sledzuk on 6 September 1991, but very soon renamed Juvent. In 1992 she was aquired by the South African navy, renamed Outeniqua after a range of mountains in Western South Africa and was commissioned on 8 June 1993. She served for 11 years until decommissioned in a sunset ceremony on 30 July 2004 In 2005, she was sold to Mertech Marine Pty. Ltd. (Offshore Maritime Servicess- mgr) and renamed Paardeburg. Sold again in 2006 to C&M Gp. she became Ice Maiden I in 2007.

gmd : 9 October, 2009 at 18:10 http://uglyships.wordpress.com/2009/07/ ... omment-587

I served on this vessel in 2001. We left the port of Durban on 9/11 2001, the very day the tragic world trade center disaster happened. I remember leaving the port and watching the plains crash into the buildings, as we moved away from land, the signal faded and the tv just showed static noise. It was an uncertain ten days at sea as we sailed towards Australia, and then we were notified that we were turning around and heading home. We made a detour and exercised with the French Navy at Reunion island, where I set foot on dry land again for the first time in 16 days.

I will never forget this massive smelly bucket with it’s Russian instruction manuals, and markings on the bulkheads, but it was an awesome ship to be out on the open sea with. It is a pity that it ended up all dismantled and scrapped. My roommate at the time told me later that the engine on that ship was beyond repair, and needed to be replaced.

Ice Maiden 1 seen here rather forlornly alongside A&P's Bede Yard, Port of Tyne (North East England) on 8th October 2008.

Unfortunaltey the business that owned her and were all set to convert her to a floating hotel have gone into liquidation - so the future of the vessel is under a big question mark.

Fjord seen here leaving the Port of Tyne - outbound for Rotterdam on 29th May 2008. Photographed from Tyne Street, North Shields (North East England).

After a lay by in the Tyne owing to unsuitable sea conditions to discharge her load - Ice Maiden 1 (ex-Paardeberg) - IMO 9056894, she headed for the calmer and deeper waters of Rotterdam for the unload. Ice Maiden 1 will then be towed back to the Tyne fro her conversion to a Floatel.
